Gargoyle Research: Mind map and key ideas
I decided to scribble down my main ideas for a gargoyle design. I wanted to do something that I felt was different and challenged common preconceptions of gargoyles. Because there is no definitive description as to what a gargoyle should look like, I took full advantage in writing down lots of ideas and directions I could go. My favourites which I will hopefully be able to explore in greater detail are mythological creatures with emphasis on the hydra, a favourite creature during childhood, and the kraken (just because it's a bit weird and different). I put organic as a separate category which seems a bit vague however I am interested in experimenting with different materials including wood and bone which aren't common amongst gargoyles. I thought of elaborative skulls juxtaposed with metals or other materials, as well as wooden sculptures. A Pagan theme interested me also because of the mythological influence including the horned god and green man. These could both combine organic elements. Last of all, is my favourite so far, Steampunk. In my own unrealistic vision I imagine a super Hydra made of metal cogs with animal skulls and elaborate metalwork - in reality, who knows? I do have a slightly different and less anamorphic idea which I will not disclose until I have sketches to back me up. I can't wait to get started on this idea and hope it will result in my final sculpt. Aside from these main influences / categories I thought that dinosaur and Egyptian gargoyles would be awesome. Maybe I should make a dinogyptian gargoyle too?
