BA3 Briefing (Studio)

I'm really happy and proud to say that at the start of writing about the BA3 briefing I am in a comfortable position with Maya. I've made so much progress since the start of the Directed Study workshops and I can't wait to get stuck into BA3 as a result. I'm also feeling inspired by my mark for BA2 and achieving my second 1:1 despite a lot of ups and downs throughout recent months. It's given me the mindset that anything is achievable if I put my mind to it and with the support of my lovely boyfriend who looks after me when I'm curled over my computer with my head in a jug of coffee.

The way I feel at the moment is that Maya is a bit like Sims but completely unrestricted as well as being a good exercise for the ol' brain.

The BA3 brief was inspiring, hopeful and entertaining. In short, the concurrent theme is Architecture, which is great because the mere thought of modeling organic forms in Maya haunt my nightmares. I was really inspired by all the amazing images George showed us on his slides, like, I WANT TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT. I feel hopeful that this project will be fun and I will be able to succeed in it after 2 weeks of becoming a little bit obsessed with Maya. The entertaining part was when it was revealed that the project was not last year's castle project, and that we wouldn't be told WHAT assets we will be creating until week 5 (instantly met with gasps and nervous laughs). I think it's a great idea to postpone the final piece until later in the project. It enables us to really work hard on our techniques before feeling overwhelmed and thrown in at the deep end. So as ambiguous as the project may sound, we've got a lot to be cracking on with meanwhile.

Submission 22nd May:

The submission is similar to Zbrush. We will create a final asset and produce a turntable render for submission. I've actually had a piddle about with making a turntable today so I'm feeling happy about that. I will be documenting everything on my blog again as well as creating a design template for the inevitable PDF document which helped speed up the presentation process last time.

Additional (Pre) Submission 1st May:

We must submit 4 model studies prior to being assigned our final asset brief. I've got a solid idea in mind, it's extremely ambitious at this point but I'm hopeful. It will be immense. I'll be producing lots of studies throughout the Easter holiday so I'm confident in meeting this criteria and really excited to be starting it.

We've been told to be exhausting research into architecture and that if we find a period or style that particularly resonates, to cling to it and perfect it as our final asset will be themed and must be historically correct. At present I know little to nothing about architecture so I'm excited to be filling sketchbooks with studies, collecting millions of reference images from primary and secondary sources, producing diagrams and collecting textures. We have also been told that we need to look not only at the exterior of architecture, but to also learn a bit about how and why it works. George compared buildings to anatomy, they have several layers which I must develop a good understanding of to make my assets realistic.

I think that we should be grateful that we aren't assigned the final asset brief until week 5 !!!!!!!!!
