Lateral Thinking: Gargoyles - Thinking about where instead of what

Whilst I was researching gargoyles I was thinking about their purpose and how I could push that further. I imagined a scene where rivers flow down mountains into a deep forest where it collects there as a sort of well inside an abandoned temple. Although my mind was obviously distracted it was an interesting exercise to think about where I want my gargoyle to be, rather than how it looks. This way I get a real feel for the purpose of the gargoyle rather than being bogged down with aesthetics. I imagine that in every place where water has collected and is flowing throughout the buildings here that I could have a gargoyle to fit in with the scenery. Covered in moss and possibly symbolic of an ancient religion, made of stone with severe weathering.
