Last term my greatest downfall was my organisation. This term I want to nail my workflow. It's been a slow start admittedly, Christmas guests didn't leave until a week into the project and working in retail over Christmas has taken its toll. To regain any time lost I have some time off work which means I have a few weeks of undisturbed commitment to my project.
Although written in the form of an essay, our contextual studies project is actually a research report, which can only mean oodles of research. I'm excited about the brief as it's hitting the nail on the head with any concerns I have over my future within the gaming industry and it's giving me a better understanding of what actually happens if I get my dream job. I've dedicated the majority of the work hours to research because I want to collect as much information as possible, that's what is most important after all. The research and development period will also include typing up all of my notes from our lectures and posting them on my blog. I feel very confident in writing essays and to be honest I don't REALLY need the full week to write it, but I'm allowing extra time as I'll be working on my final piece at the same time. I've given two days for preparation for submission which will include the tedious waiting times for getting it proof read several times and put into a PDF as well as having copious amounts of tea to ensure I make it to hand in.
With my studio work I have also made the decision despite seeing some of my peers start on their final pieces already, to dedicate around half the entire time researching my ideas. I would class this as a practice period and an iterative idea period. I want a certain level of authenticity when it comes to my sculpt. I want to push boundaries and know that I am well within my right to do so. I want to look at multiple ideas and then move them onto the iteration stage with multiple mood boards and written research to back any sketches up. During this period I will be working on multiple sculpts non-relative to the brief to get a faster grip on Zbrush. I will also use this time to type up my notes from workshops exhaustively and practice anything learned as well as develop a further understanding of topics covered utilising external resources such as YouTube tutorials and Pixologic tutorials.
The iteration stage will involve lots of low poly 3D sculpts all following on from a series of sketches both traditional and digital. I will create mind-maps for each main idea I have and create silhouettes within Photoshop to create new and more abstract ideas. Anything I make I want to push any preconceived ideas associated with the term gargoyle as well as juxtapose some more elaborative concepts with classic styles. Any final ideas I have I may do some concept mood sketches to get a better feel of how I would want the final render to turn out.
I feel that just over a week is a reasonable and achievable amount of time to sculpt my final piece. Looking back to the first lecture it was mentioned that by the end of the project we will be much faster and much better at 3D sculpting. It was mentioned that in a previous year students hadn't been given the subject to sculpt until last minute to highlight this. It is for this reason that I see no point in starting my final sculpt too soon. I feel that at the rate I am progressing by the time I reach the end of the project I will have learned so much more that I would rather include in my final sculpt.
Throughout the entire project I will be attending regular life drawing lessons and will be uploading my work onto the blog regularly. Alongside this I will be following some tutorials from Imagine FX: Anatomy guides as well as doing some external life drawing of my own and getting my moneys worth out of a 5 year relationship.
There are a few days at the end to put things into PDFs and make things 'look pretty'. Maybe I won't make everything look like it's straight out of Laura Ashley but I do want to make more of an effort with my presentation this time around.
My insanely organised Desktop background. Photo-shopped in my cat because I felt bad not having her there and she's so cute <3 |
