Contextual Studies Brief

Haroun and the Sea of Stories, Background: Cheap prosecco bottle turned flower vase
Possibly the most exciting CS brief to date - this brief combines both studio and contextual work! Hurrah or more... Haroun!

In summary our task is to research how games represent characters with particular emphasis on the development and iteration stages. We need to understand and make connections between literature, art and character design. Our submission will take form in a 10 minute presentation with a partner. Additionally there is some studio practice implemented within the brief. We must each choose a character from a short story and select 3 different styles and portray the chosen character in each style accumulating with 6 total characters between the two partners.

Representational Strategies (Styles)

• Graphic Novel/Comic/Manga/anime (Telltale games/ Scott Pilgrim/Sword Art online)
• Miminalism (Thomas Was Alone)
• Pixel art (The Deer God)
• Painterly (Okami)
• ‘Realism’ (real world - GTA)
• Fantasy (Guild Wars)
• ‘Surrealism’ (Machinarium)

We must produce 'play boards' for each character showing how the character would behave in a game and how they would move, similar to the character sheets we produced in BA1.

The selected text is Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie as pictured above. We must produce a 500 word analysis of the meanings that we locate in the book.  We must use short quotations representing what we feel are the main themes and crucial moments for the characters. This will be handed in as an 'entry ticket' to the first lesson of BA3. We must have also decided who our partners are by this point.

I have decided to work with my bestie Jess Raptorus for the project because I know where she lives if we get a crap grade! No in all seriousness I wasn't going to work with anyone who I am close to in case of any disputes but as one of the critical criteria for curating this presentation is communication, I thought it was BEST to work with someone who I know I can communicate efficiently and effectively with. I also think she will add some spunk and sass to the presentation so together we've called our team 'Jeffy' which is a mash up of both our short names.

From my notes I can decipher:

- INTERACTIVITY - the key in game design
- Ted Talks, Kirby Ferguson must watch on VLE
- Heider Experiment, must also watch on VLE
- Anthropomorphism
- Archetypes and subversion
-  Philosophical questions
- Stereotype VS Archetype
- Narratological
- Yes it does bloody matter, everything to do with character design MATTERS
- characterization and differentiation between meanings. True character, what comes out of a character under pressure.
- Ethical concerns. Dante's Inferno makes Sharon angry because its exploratory of the original poem. Boooooooo Dante's Interno!!!!!!!!!!! Explore how character design can have negative effects like this.
- Character design matters, research into phycology and development of morals matters to character design.

Over the Easter holiday I will be reading the given text and working on my analysis as well as starting to think of characters that would be interesting to choose, working alongside the Raptor all the way from Latvia. I want to get as much research that can back us up done during the holidays so I don't fall behind again like in every project.
