It's been around 2 hours after my original post and I have a semi accurate front and side view 'blue print' to take into Maya and begin construction. I'm very pleased with the results and will use this as a guide to build a very basic structure which I will be able to modify throughout the refinement process.
When building the structure I will use this to build parts individually through the orthographic view ports and then I will refer to my reference images whilst using the perspective view to add detail and perfect the shape.
